MSU named one of 53 'international powerhouses' by Times Higher Ed.

April 21, 2017

MSU has been identified as one of 53 institutions poised to catch up with and overtake the world's best universities through Times Higher Education, or THE.

Evaluating universities from across the globe, MSU is one of the 53 "international powerhouses," holding the potential to eventually outrank "old star" institutions like Oxford, Harvard and Princeton, according to the evaluation by THE.

According to THE, powerhouse institutions are "universities whose outreach is exponential, but in many cases hasn't been reflected in their reputation scores."

The group of old star institutions are made up of well-established institutions that have strong reputations and tend to perform strongly across all disciplines.

Nine other Big Ten schools were named in the list — The University of Michigan, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania State University, Ohio State University, Purdue, University of Minnesota and the University of Maryland.

Billy Wong, the data scientist for the list, determined the 53 by mapping the citation impact, or the number of times a university's published work is cited by scholars, and reputation scores of 980 universities that appeared in the last THE World University Rankings. Powerhouse schools have higher citation impacts, indicating they have a larger audience reach.

While these newer universities may not have the reputation of older, more established universities, the report shows these universities — MSU included — could become the new elite.
