After an impressive performance last weekend against University of Michigan, MSU hockey junior goaltender Ed Minney was named the Big Ten Conference Second Star of the Week.

In the Spartans’ opening contest last weekend against the Wolverines, the netminder from Wind Gap, Pa. recorded his first career shutout in a 3-0 victory over U-M. Minney recorded 24 saves in the victory.

In the win, Minney became the first MSU goaltender since Jeff Lerg in January 2008 to shutout the Wolverines at Yost Ice Arena.

On Saturday, Minney registered 23 saves as the Spartans fell to the Wolverines 3-2 in a shootout. The game was declared a tie, but the Wolverines earned the extra point in conference standings after they won the shootout.

The 6-foot-5 goaltender stopped 47 of 49 total shots that came his way in net in the two-game series, logging a .959 save percentage.

Minney’s selection — his first career Big Ten weekly honor — continues to add on to what has been an impactful season for the first-year starter.

He recorded a career-high 46 saves in a 5-3 loss to No. 4 Penn State on Jan. 14.

The Spartans will have a bye week this weekend, but will face the Wisconsin Badgers in a two-game home series Feb. 3 and 4.
