For two MSU students, Open Mic Night on Tuesday was an opportunity for both to share their musical talents, and their up-and-coming band, with the MSU community.
Education sophomore Michael Morgan and construction management senior Matt Eble make up the band Sebrus, along with two other members who do not attend MSU.
Sebrus is an upcoming group that has only been together for about eight months, Eble said.
Both Eble and Morgan said they are really into music and grew up surrounded by music. Morgan’s inspiration for becoming involved with music and playing the guitar dates all the way back to middle school.
“I started playing guitar in middle school, I’ve always been a music person and I always enjoyed music, so I just picked it up and ran with it and found the guys that we play with,” Morgan said.
Eble’s inspiration and path is similar to Morgan’s. He got his start in middle school as well, but also help from his family encouraged him to really get serious with music.
“I’ve always liked music, my dad is really big into classic rock, my sister sent me a lot of songs growing up and she’s kind of older so that kind of widened my variety of things,” he said.
The band works around each other's similarities in the genre of alternative music when making and writing songs, which end up complementing one another.
“We all have a sort of similar interest in genres, so we all kind of like metal music and alternative, things like that,” he said. “We each have a different amount of what we like in each sub-category, so it complements each other well.”
All four members play guitar and sing. While using their similarities, the band members also use their differences in a positive way when performing.
As a group, they all know and understand that they have differences in their guitar play and vocals. Eble said this is what sets them apart from each other and creates the ability to put together good music.
“Our other guitar player is very ambient with his guitar riffs, so he does a lot of things I’m not so great at and I play a lot of very structured guitar riffs,” Eble said. “It’s kind of similar with our vocals, I would say Mike’s a pretty dynamic singer, maybe more emotional than I am. I’m very strict with how I do things and kind of uptight, I guess.”
Being a fairly new band, Sebrus is still gaining experience. Although they have no upcoming shows lined up, the band hopes to play in the local area soon.
