After a hectic week of basketball beginning with a blowout loss to then-No. 2 Kentucky, a confidence boosting win over Mississippi Valley State and then a controversial win against Florida Gulf Coast, MSU has fallen to No. 24 in the rankings, dropping 11 spots in the AP poll.
Aside from MSU's slide in the poll, the top 25 saw a lot of movement at the top of the rankings. The country now has a new No. 1 as head coach John Calipari and his Wildcat crew have taken the top spot from Duke. After losing to then-No. 7 Kansas, the Blue Devils have fallen five spots to No. 6 in the polls.
The defending national champions, Villanova, have taken the No. 2 slot after beginning the season 5-0. With all of the sliding in the top of the rankings, Big Ten member Indiana was able to slide up to the No. 3 spot. Last year's NCAA Tournament runner-ups North Carolina have earned the No. 4 ranking after starting the season 4-0.
Rounding out the top 5 is head coach Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks who finished the week with an upset win over then-No. 1 Duke and a easy win over Siena College.
There is also a tie in this week's rankings, Florida State and in-state rival University of Michigan are tied for the No. 25 rank. One year after falling out of the top 25, U-M has returned after starting the 2016-17 campaign 4-0.
