The United States Basketball Writers Association announced Friday, Oct. 14, that men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo would be receiving another award on his already lengthy list. Izzo would be honored with the 2016 Dean Smith Award, according to a press release.

The accolade goes to any one individual in college basketball who embodies the late North Carolina coach. The USBWA will be giving the award to Izzo at a later home game, yet to be announced.

Izzo is the second person to received the award after after the organization created it last year. Former Georgetown head coach John Thompson was the recipient of it last year.

Along with the Dean Smith Award, Izzo adds to his growing laundry list of honors he’s received this year. Izzo was already named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, earlier this off-season.

Basketball season will be in full swing as both the men’s and women’s teams will host their annual Midnight Madness event later today, Oct. 14. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. and both teams will hold a scrimmage along with other events.
