Actress Chloë Grace Moretz helped kick off a voter registration drive today at MSU on behalf of the Michigan Democratic Coordinated Campaign. The event held in Wilson Hall and open to MSU students, was organized as an effort to encourage students to register to vote and to vote for democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the upcoming election.

Moretz kicked off the event with a short speech about the importance of voting and her support for Clinton. Moretz, a long-time supporter of Clinton, expressed her desire for the younger generation to register and vote in the general election.

“Not voting is a vote for Trump,” Moretz said. “So we really need to organize everyone together, really show the Republicans that our young Democrats are organized, they are energized and they are ready to be out there in November, and we’re not going to lose Michigan, we’re going to win it.”

The deadline to register to vote in Michigan is Oct. 11, which is one of the earlier deadlines out of all 50 states. If not registered by that date, students cannot vote.

“I think voter registration is a really big deal, and I’m specifically in Michigan because October 11 is a deadline that you guys really have to meet,” Moretz said. “It just feels really important and I want to, you know, make sure kids understand that this election is not one that we can miss,” Moretz said.

After meeting and taking photos with Moretz, the students who attended the event broke into groups to go register other students on campus.

James Madison freshman Amanda Jarrett and comparative culture and politics sophomore Jack Kellett were among the students to meet Moretz at the voter registration drive.

“I was definitely surprised by the amount of people that showed up,” Kellett said. “Everyone seems very enthusiastic and passionate about voting. It’s just a really great environment and I know that these people, if they’re going around doing voter registration, will demonstrate that enthusiasm and hopefully get a lot of people registered.”

Jarrett was able to work with the Clinton campaign at the event as an intern to get more volunteer and political experience, she said.

“I think it’s a really great way to advocate for people to vote and just getting everyone registered is so important,” she said.

Students who aren’t sure whether they have registered to vote or not can check online here, where they can also register if need be.
