International relations junior Lorenzo Santavicca, center, prepares for an ASMSU meeting on Aug. 30, 2016 at the Student Services Building at 556 E. Circle Drive. Santavicca is the current president of ASMSU.
The Associated Students of Michigan State University's, or ASMSU's, former vice president for academic affairs Tyler Orlando has resigned from his position because of medical issues, according to an ASMSU press release.
Effective Sept. 19, Orlando has medically withdrawn from the university and his position at ASMSU, as he must undergo spinal surgery with a long recovery period.
“Four months ago, my peers entrusted me with the position of ASMSU’s vice president for academic affairs,” Orlando said in the press release. “This invaluable experience challenged and developed my leadership abilities, which could not have been achieved without my fellow team at ASMSU.”
ASMSU will hold a special meeting to elect a replacement vice president for academic affairs at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 in room 328 Student Services.
“Candidates will have to go through the same office of the president process during the election that we had back in the spring,” ASMSU President Lorenzo Santavicca said. “They’ll be notified of their candidacy some time next week, and then they can campaign for the general assembly and then we’ll have the election at that general assembly meeting.”
Until a new vice president for academic affairs is elected, Santavicca will cover many of the duties of Orlando’s former position.
“In the meantime, I have assumed a lot of the duties of academic affairs, and then when the new person is elected they will be trained into the new role,” Santavicca said.
Students who are interested in running for the position of vice president of academic affairs can pick up election packets, which will be available online and in the ASMSU business office starting Sept. 23. Statements of intent must be returned to the business office by 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 29.
