Behind the scenes with Matt Harper, MSU director of football technology

April 5, 2016

With MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio and the players usually in the spotlight, many people, including MSU director of football technology Matt Harper, do not always receive notoriety for their work.

Harper is in his seventh year with MSU football and he graduated from MSU in 1999. As an undergraduate, Harper was a student manager for the football team. In 2002 he became the video coordinator for Northwestern University before Harper has returned to his alma mater in 2009.

“Its cool to see how things have changed over the years and yet at the same time we’re still the same,” Harper said. “Growing up a Michigan State fan and going here, we obviously went through some downtimes in football, and what has been done here has been mind-blowing to me.”

As the director of football technology, Harper films each practice and game. He also will make different videos for marketing purposes and instructional videos.

His biggest struggle has been keeping up with the ever-changing technology. Harper said the team is looking into using virtual reality and drones.

“They can delve deeper into our opponents than ever before,” Harper said. “(We can) use this technology to make ourselves and our coaches and our team more efficient.”

Harper’s work with MSU football has earned him Big Ten video coordinator of the year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association twice, first in the 2009-10 season and the 2013-14 season.
