Driver on Tap, an app originated in the Lansing and East Lansing area and created by MSU students, has been picking up a lot steam during its first year of operation. This spring, it will be expanding to high-profile places such as the Hamptons and the Jersey Shore.
Founder of Driver on Tap Jose Ramirez said the idea came to him one night when drove to Dublin Square Irish Pub, had a few drinks and then realized he had no way of getting his car home safely.
“That was kind of the aha moment,” Ramirez said.
Soon after that, Ramirez, a former computer science engineering student at MSU, came into contact with urban planning sophomore Alex Riguardi and general management sophomore Hyukjoo Kwon, and the idea soon became a reality.
Through the app, a person signals they need someone to drive them in their car. That driver then takes an Uber to the location of the app user, the app user hands the driver their keys and is driven to where they need to go. The driver then uses an Uber to get to their next location.
“Ideally, this is way better than leaving your car, Ubering home and figuring out how to come pick it up in the morning,” Ramirez said. “(The app) is a really convenient piece of mind and it’s 100 times better than driving home drunk.”
Driver on Tap drivers are insured to drive another person’s car for up to $1 million, similar to how truck drivers are insured to drive semi-trucks, Riguardi said.
Driver on Tap charges $25 an hour, plus the price of the Uber, which the Driver on Tap driver used to get to the location.
Riguardi said it’s been a bit of a wild ride, being a student and entrepreneur at the same time, but the whirlwind of experiences he’s had throughout the journey has been irreplaceable.
“It’s interesting,” Riguardi said. “It’s funny when you have this business and have people working for you in different states, but still have to go to class. … But at the end of the day, it’s given us such a valuable experience.”
