Take a look at crazy E.L. bar scene on St. Patrick's Day

March 17, 2016

Thursday morning, many Spartans got out of bed even earlier than they usually do to celebrate St. Paddy's Day. Lines twisted around the bars in East Lansing and bagpipes could be heard in the distance of Grand River Avenue just as the sun peaked over the horizon at 7:45 a.m.

For best friends since freshman year, electrical engineering senior Daniel Jarratt, environmental engineering senior Matt Olinik and mechanical engineering senior Mark Hartfelder, this was their first time getting up early and heading out.

“We were headed to Dublin’s, but the line was way too long this morning, so we came to Harper’s instead because they have free breakfast,” Olinik said. “We’re headed there later though. We’re probably going to bounce around.”

Many Spartans planned to be out partying the whole day, skipping classes.

"I have a class at 1 p.m. today, but we'll see how that goes," Hartfelder said.

Bars around East Lansing had opened in the earliest hours of the morning, and were noting a lot of activity.

“We’re usually pretty busy, but today is already pretty crazy,” Harper's bouncer Austyn Graham said. “It’s a lot of fun, though. We’ve been open since 7 a.m., and we’re getting a lot of business.”

Students were looking forward to the rest of the day.

“We’ll see how it goes, we just started,” Olinik said. “But it’s going to be a good day, I think.”
