MSU criminal justice senior Michael Collier was involved in a tragic car accident this past week resulting in severe injuries all over his body.
Media and information senior Tony Fant is a close friend of Collier’s and said Collier was on his way home to Detroit when the accident occurred.
Losing control of his vehicle, he crashed into a guardrail and the mangled car crushed his left leg and right arm. Fant added the fire department was forced to use the jaws of life to remove him.
Further, the angle of Collier’s body in the devastated vehicle after the accident pinched an artery in his leg and likely saved his life, Fant said.
Due to the severity of his condition, Collier was taken by helicopter to the nearest hospital and had his leg amputated in the flight, Fant said. He eventually had to have the fingers on his right hand surgically reattached to mend his body.
At the moment, Fant said the whole situation seemed surreal and his family and friends are now recognizing the “severity of the situation.”
“It was one of those things you didn’t think was real,” he said, or at least could not happen to a friend.
Responding to the crash, many of Collier’s friends banded together to form a GoFundMe page to pay for prosthetics he will need after his arduous recovery.
The page estimates Collier will need approximately $6,500 to pay for the treatment and prosthetics.
A valedictorian of his High School in Detroit, Collier had aspirations to attend the police academy and become an officer, Fant said.
“This shouldn’t have happened to him,” Fant said, “But he is looking on the brighter side of the situation.”
His friends and family have shown unwavering support, Fant said, and anticipate Collier’s optimism will allow him to recover and achieve his aspirations of attending the police academy.
“We are asking for your help, to help fund a prosthetic leg that would be adequate for him to return to mobility and a healthy lifestyle,” the GoFundMe page reads. “This will hopefully allow him to get back physical and being able to join the police academy and the force to help make our society better.”
“He’s got a positive vibe to him, Fant said, “we are all rooting for him.”
Fant is asking fellow MSU students to keep Collier in their thoughts and made an assurance his positive will lead him to achieve dreams.
Collier said the support he has received from MSU students has been one hundred percent.
