Businessman and billionaire Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) emerged as winners in Ingham County during the Michigan primaries on March 8, with both candidates also taking the state for their respective parties. The primary saw "increased" voter turnout for both the state and Ingham County, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said before all the votes we tallied.
Trump was declared the projected Republican winner around 9 p.m., shortly after the last polls closed. Across the state, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won second, with Ohio Gov. John Kasich coming in a close third. In Ingham County, Kasich took a close second, finishing only two points behind Trump.
The Democratic race was close statewide, with Sanders holding a narrow lead until being declared the projected winner by the Associated Press at 11:30 p.m. In Ingham County, Sanders continued to pull away from Clinton throughout the night, ending with an 11-point lead.
Earlier in the day, some Ingham County precincts ran out of ballots due to unprecedented voter turnout. The precincts resorted to photocopying to provide ballots to voters, forcing a portion of votes to be counted by hand and delaying reporting.
“It was a result of a high voter turnout,” Byrum said. “I have the utmost confidence in the election officials and the city clerk in making sure that all of those votes were accurately tabulated.”
