Tips to know before Bernie Sanders speaks at Breslin Center

March 2, 2016

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) will be in East Lansing today as part of a free “A Future to Believe In” rally at Breslin Center.

Guests are asked to RSVP to the event, but it is not necessary as the event will follow a first-come, first-serve basis for available seats.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. with Sanders expected to speak at 7 pm. According to the official Facebook event, about 2,500 people have RSVP-ed, with many more to be expected. Arriving at Breslin Center several hours beforehand to get a good seat is a must.

In an email sent out to students by the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, key logistical points are mentioned for students expecting to attend.

Breslin Center seats nearly 15,000 individuals and the floor will be open to those who are willing to stand. Individuals hoping to get in will be admitted through Gates A, B and D.

Items such as backpacks, signs, banners or weapons will not be allowed inside through security.

Parking will be available for $5 cash on-site at Breslin Center with other options in nearby lots. Public transportation will also be available through CATA. Carpooling is encouraged due to the sheer amount of people expected.

Sanders comes at a convenient time for MSU and nearby residents. The Michigan primary election will be held March 8. Sanders' visit will be one last chance to hear the Democratic presidential candidate speak.

All individuals, including those who are not going to the event, are encouraged to vote for the upcoming primaries. East Lansing’s city clerk will be at the Breslin today to manage absentee ballot applications. These can be turned in to East Lansing City Hall. The deadline for applications will be 2 p.m. Saturday March 5.

Earlier in February, Sanders held an event at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. as part of his campaign. That event drew around 9,000 people.
