Update: Tuesday, 8:34 p.m — Michael Onwenu announced his intentions to play football for U-M this upcoming season. Onwenu had previously committed to U-M in June of 2015, but MSU had made a late push in January which made Onwenu reconsider. In the end, Onwenu stayed true to his original decision, landing Jim Harbaugh another top tier recruit.
Initial: Tuesday, 4:28 p.m. — The NCAA football signing day kicks off Wednesday morning, and MSU head coach Mark Dantonio and his staff will be awaiting the final decision on a few big names. He will already be hearing the sweet sound of the fax machine on the verbal commits he has already received, as well as from the commits who have already enrolled in the university.
There are also a few names who remain uncommitted that MSU has pursued vigorously, but by tomorrow afternoon, those players will have determined their future in football. Either way, Dantonio wants to see all his targets’ names roll through that fax machines and add to arguably his best recruiting class in his tenure.
Michael Onwenu (Height: 6’3 / Weight: 370 / 40 yard time: 5.52 / Position: Guard)
Onwenu has been committed to Michigan since June of 2015, but the Spartans have gained some ground on the recruiting trail with Onwenu. MSU offered Onwenu on January 18, and he took an official visit on Jan. 22, along with Prince Sammons.
Onwenu is one of the nation’s highest rated guard prospects and arguably the most sought after player in the state of Michigan. He attended Cass Technical High School with a separate MSU commit in Demetric Vance. Onwenu is scheduled to make his decision between U-M and MSU Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
Lavert Hill (Height: 5’10 / Weight: 176 / 40 yard time: 4.41 / Position: DB)
Getting Donnie Corley, the highly touted wide receiver from Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Michigan, was big in more ways than one for the Spartans. Not only do they add Corley, but they also significantly improved their chances at landing his teammate and best friend, Hill, who is ranked only two spots below Corley in ESPN’s top 300.
Hill set his announcement time for 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. He has narrowed his choices down to MSU, U-M (where his brother, Delano Hill, is a safety on the team), and Penn State, who Hill had previously given a verbal commitment to. The decision is expected to come down to MSU and U-M, and the deciding factor might be times of visit, as Hill saw MSU on Jan. 22, while U-M got him in December.
Prince Sammons (Height: 6’8 / Weight: 280 / 40 yard time: 5.2 / Position: DE)
The four star defensive end Sammons has been offered by 24 schools, but has seemingly narrowed his decision down to four schools: MSU, Oregon, Duke, and Auburn. Sammons visited MSU on Jan. 22 and received an in home visit from MSU defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett on Jan. 26.
He also got a visit from Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn on the 26th, leading up to his visit to Auburn on Jan. 29. Sammons' father told AL.com that his son would “be a great fit” at Auburn, and Duke had made enormous strides in 2015 to get a commitment from Sammons. As it stands now, MSU may be a slight front-runner and would be the closest school to his home in Cincinnati.
