For MSU PeaceJam, wanting to make a difference is a common goal. But Wednesday it will be doing things a little differently — by using music to talk about terrorism and injustice.
MSU PeaceJam will be holding it’s first PeaceJam Jam on from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 9 in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities Auditorium. The concert is free, but there is an optional $2 donation.
MSU PeaceJam is a peace education organization specializing in creating projects and events to spread educational messages about social equality and peace. Residential College in the Arts and Humanities sophomore Charlie Burg first proposed the idea after he joined the organization at the beginning of the school year.
“I had the idea to bring music into the mix,” Burg said. “When I first joined the group a few months ago, I saw the word 'jam' (and) I thought it had to do with music, when it actually didn’t. So I took the idea and made it into a PeaceJam Jam.”
The performance will consist of seven students, each either doing spoken word poetry or songs following the theme of human rights, terrorism and injustice. Following their performances, there will be an open mic for anyone in the audience who wishes to participate.
Burg said he was inspired to involve music in talks of peace because he said he thinks it’s a powerful tool.
“I realized I can use my music for a greater cause,” Burg said. “As students, it’s hard for us to directly involve ourselves with these issues, so our most important responsibility is to inform and learn and realize the fact that humanity is suffering. If we can draw the peace and love of music to the suffering from humanity, we can impact the audience that way.”
Residential College in the Arts and Humanities sophomore Sariah Metcalfe said she’s looking forward to the event for multiple reasons.
“PeaceJam Jam is really exciting just because it’ll be our first ever big event like this," Metcalfe said. "We’ve never done a concert before. We’re bringing people together to try to make a difference.”
