Three MSU linemen named AP All-Americans

HELMET RATING

Three MSU football players were named Associated Press All-Americans on Sunday. Fifth-year senior center Jack Allen was named first team, junior offensive tackle Jack Conklin was named second team and fifth-year senior defensive end Shilique Calhoun was named third team.

In recent weeks, Allen, Conklin and Calhoun have all won national honors from other media outlets. Allen was also named to first team by CBS Sports and SI.com and was voted second team by USA Today and Walter Camp. Allen has played in 47 career games, starting 46 of them, and has only allowed three sacks in his career.

“Jack Allen is a two-time All-American, who possesses a tremendous amount of experience and his leadership level is often unmatched,” MSU head coach Mark Dantonio said in a Spartan Athletics press release.

Conklin was named first team by USA Today, second team by Walter camp and honorable mention by SI.com. Conklin tallied 65.5 knockdowns despite missing two games this season due to injury.

“Jack Conklin is a gifted athlete, who embodies all of the qualities of the ideal left tackle,” Dantonio said. “He’s an intelligent player, who runs extremely well for his size. Jack has been an impact player in our starting lineup for the last three years, and his toughness permeates the entire offensive line.”

Calhoun was named second team by CBS Sports and Walter Camp and honorable mention by SI.com. Calhoun is the only defensive lineman in school history to have been named first-team All-Big Ten in three different years.

“Shilique Calhoun continues to be a dominant, disruptive force on the defensive line,” Dantonio said.

“He has the flair for providing a spark when the team needs it, with tackles for losses, sacks and blocked field goals. Shilique is a veteran player with an extensive amount of knowledge of our entire defense, who plays with great effort and toughness. He’s an impact player and his teammates continue to feed off his energy.”

The No.3 Spartans' (12-1) next game will be against No. 2 Alabama (12-1) in the national championship semifinals; the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The game will be at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on New Year's Eve, 8 p.m. EST.
