"Through the Banks of the Red Cedar," a documentary by Maya Washington, the daughter of former MSU wide receiver Gene Washington, highlights the legacy of the historic 1965 Spartan football team.
The documentary shows the critical role MSU played in racial desegregation, thanks to the strategies of legendary head football coach Duffy Daugherty.
"Through the Banks of the Red Cedar" is Maya Washington’s first major feature film and is currently in post-production editing, and if all goes according to plan the film should be released early 2016.
However, she still is in need of donations to meet the goal of an early 2016 release. She has raised more than $35,000 of the estimated $100,000 needed to meet post-production time deadlines.
Donations for the project are tax-deductible and go directly to the film.
“This project has been funded exclusively through grants, donations, and the filmmaker's personal resources,” Maya Washington said in an email. “Funds raised during our Finishing Funds Campaign help with post-production costs (editing, licensing, color correction, sound design, finishing costs) and community outreach nationwide. Many have asked how they can help ... right now, we need donations. Our need is urgent if we are to complete the film in 2016.”
