MSU French Club responds to attacks in Paris

November 17, 2015

In the wake of last Friday’s attacks in Paris, one club in particular at MSU has felt particularly affected, the French Club.

Interdisciplinary humanities senior Madison Meter said the group was all affected, albeit differently.

“There wasn’t a unified response, we all internalized it on our own,” Meter said. “For those of us who have been to France, it was shocking because it feels more understandable and a lot closer to home.”

Meter said she thought this attack has shed light on just how serious the violence around the world has been.

“I’m amazed how this attack on Paris, which is the capital of the Western world, has brought forward so much coverage and exposure on attacks that are not part of the Western world,” she said. “It really has started a large conversation about violence all around the world. It’s sad that this has to be used.”

Secretary of the French Club Adrianna Davis said the club has a meeting on Tuesday and the e-board wants to use the meeting as a chance to clarify and discuss exactly what happened. She said the club will have a moment of silence and anyone is welcome to come.

“I think that if people could come to our meeting and understand our perspective of what happened,” Davis said. “If anyone wants to talk to us and find out more information they can talk to us.”

The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in Wells Hall, room A118.

Webmaster of the French Club Sarah McCabe said she thinks the club might want to plan something not just for France, but for other countries too. She said she thinks it’s important for everyone to be aware of the other attacks that happened that day.

“It’s not just France affected by all this,” McCabe said.

Meter agreed and said MSU students can do more than mourn to help Paris and the countries impacted by the attacks.

“I think we have a large muslim population at Michigan State,” she said. “So I think to keep an open mind about who your audience is and what you’re saying, being mindful of who you’re surrounded by is important. Victims are of all colors. The only thing we can do is to not point out the flaws in other skin colors or religions. I think kindness and remembering how globalized our world has become. There’s nothing else we can really do.”
