Upon learning the news of the passing of beloved MSU journalism professor Bonnie Bucqueroux, others in the MSU School of Journalism department knew they wanted to do something in her honor.

Lucinda Davenport, the director for the MSU School of Journalism, and Serena Carpenter, an assistant professor in the School of Journalism, along with the School of Journalism, College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the help of University Advancement, set up a fund in honor of Bucqueroux, along with the School of Journalism.

“Upon hearing about the passing of professor Bonnie Buqueroux, many people contacted the School of Journalism to ask if there was a memorial fund set up to honor her life and her work,” Davenport said.

Carpenter said there was discussion about whether this fund should have been a scholarship fund or a teaching award, but, the ultimate decision was for the fund to be a scholarship fund for students.

“Professor Bucqueroux inspired generations of journalism students through the many years and many courses she taught,” Davenport said. “And, Bonnie’s family agreed that Bonnie would want any memorial funds to benefit students.”

“Professor Bucqueroux inspired and touched many others throughout our community who read her professional journalism work,” Davenport said.

Carpenter said the fund will likely be given to undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in journalism.

“Bonnie was a unique human, there’s no one like Bonnie and honestly, it’s not going to be the same without her,” Carpenter said. “She was probably one of the greatest teachers we’ve ever had.”

Carpenter said Buqueroux even used to spend time with students from unstable homes or students who have a tough background.

Carpenter said they are hoping for this memorial plans to be self-sustaining.

“Basically, we would continue this fund over a long period of time because the scholarship fund could continue because it will draw interest,” Carpenter said. “In order for it to be self-sustaining, ideally, we would raise at least $50,000.”

So far, $6,076 has been raised, about $1,000 more than the goal of $5,000.
