The United Nations 70th Anniversary Celebration Gala is set to take place this Sunday, Oct. 25 at MSU’s Abrams Planetarium. The event is hosted by the Greater Lansing United Nations Association, or GLUNA. Many MSU departments are sponsoring the event.
The event begins with registration at 5:30 p.m. Hors d’ oeuvres will be served, followed by keynote speakers, and a presentation for recipients of the GLUNA’s global education awards.
Lynn Bartley, GLUNA President, said every year, a “UN Day” celebration occurs to commemorate the ratification of the UN charter, which happened on Oct. 24, 1945.
“It is important to highlight the work and especially the many successes of the United Nations," Bartley said. "When people understand the broad scope of the work of the UN, they are more likely to support its efforts."
MSU departments sponsoring the event include the International Business Center, Global Business Club, Department of Chemistry, International Studies and Programs, Environmental Science and Public Policy Program.
Keynote speakers for the event include Dr. Daniel Nocera. Nocera is the Patterson Rockwood Professor of Energy at Harvard University and is a recipient of the UN’s Science and Technology Award.
Bartley said the theme of the gala, “Sustainably Lighting the World”, aligns with the current and future priorities for the UN.
“’Sustainably Lighting the World’ is a focus area of 2015 and beyond for the UN," Bartley said. "It is one of the new Sustainable Development Goals. The UN and its partners will be working together to develop sustainable ways to provide energy for the world as well as to progress in the other 16 SDG goals.”
