Looking for something fresh and exciting to decorate your dorm or apartment with?

Kimberly Lavon INK, an art studio located at 210 Abbot Road in suite 50, above Conrad's College Town Grill, opened last Friday, and owner Kimberly Lavon is already filled with excitement and optimism.

Lavon said the process of creating the studio was not a quick one.

“It took me about a month of preparation,” Lavon said. “Installing the gallery, moving everything in and making it branded towards my aesthetic."

Another factor to the new studio's development involves Lavon's old one burning down.

Lavon's previous studio, in Old Town Lansing, burned down last year and many of the items in the studio were destroyed as a result.

"I was there when (the fire) started," Lavon said. "I was finishing a client meeting. I lost over 50 percent of my entire studio, art and equipment included."

Lavon said all of the artwork she currently has on display in the gallery is work she has created, but she has plans to eventually expand the collection to feature guest artists.

“Previous collections, vintage work, new work and then, eventually, I’m going to rotate out and have new artists in every two months or so," Lavon said. “I’ll be putting out a call for entries very soon and we’ll get all kinds of art in here. Lately, I’ve been real big into woodcuts and linoleum."

Kimberly Lavon has been a professional artist for years now and said she loves her profession.

“I’ve been exhibiting art professionally since 1999,” Lavon said. “Printmaking specifically, to me, is like everything in one. Any kind of art that you want to do, you can do it in printmaking. I never get bored, I constantly love it, there’s always something new to learn and I just feel like myself.”

Lavon said the prices will widely vary from anywhere between $5 to $500 depending on the size and quality of the art.

Lavon hopes her studio will become a staple on campus, and provide artwork students can proudly display in their dorms.

“I’m hoping that the students, because I’m on campus, will decorate their dorms or wherever they’re living with actual, real original art, rather than spending money on a $5 poster that’s going to end up damaged,” Lavon said. “They’ll invest in it, and come (to the studio) and inquire about classes maybe, or help. I just want to expose the whole community to printmaking because generally, it’s not well known, and I want everybody to know about me and my work and take it home or go in their house with it.”
