"I had already endowed a scholarship in football and basketball at MSU, I wanted to do something on the academic side," former Michigan Governor Jim Blanchard said.
Blanchard, an MSU alumnus, has served in the United States House of Representatives, 42nd Governor of Michigan and Ambassador to Canada.
Blanchard said he wanted to do something for the school while he is still active and knows everyone.
"It's a way for me to give back to the university which gave me a wonderful opportunity when I was there and I feel very fortunate," Blanchard said.
The keynote speaker and recipient of the Spartan Statesmanship Award for Distinguished Public Service will be former President Bill Clinton.
Blanchard said during the decision-making process he met with several students in order to get feedback of who they would like to see speak, of whom works or worked in public service.
In 1992, Blanchard chaired Clinton's campaign in Michigan that was ultimately successful when Clinton won the state.
"I thought he would be a perfect first recipient," Blanchard said. "Clinton was the most popular name thrown out (in discussions)."
Clinton has visited the Lansing area and MSU on various occasions while in office and after his term. Overall, Clinton has visited more than any other President.
Clinton was last here in 2001 where he spoke at the Breslin Center, after the end of his final presidential term.
Blanchard said Clinton responded right away to his offer to speak and accept the award in November.
"We're really excited about it and we expect a full house," Blanchard said
Blanchard said he wants students to feel welcome and willing to attend the event and see examples of successful people in public service.
The event will be free for students. Patrons and faculty will be expected to pay, Blanchard said.
"Anything that stimulates interest is going to be good, for those interested in public service I think it could be energizing," Blanchard said.
