Michigan State University defeated Western Michigan University, 37-24, Friday night at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo.
Special teams hindered the Spartans early, as Broncos’ sophomore cornerback Darius Phillips returned the opening kick off to the 30-yard line and the second for Western Michigan’s first touchdown of the game.
The Spartans got their first points following a tipped-pass interception off Broncos’ junior quarterback Zach Terrell. Freshman running back Madre London ran in the touchdown from 24 yards out, his first career score as a Spartan.
After a drive strung along by connections between senior quarterback Connor Cook and sophomore wide receiver Macgarrett Kings Jr., London ran in his second touchdown from six yards out with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter.
On the point after attempt, the Spartans attempted a shift formation up back dive-option, but junior wide receiver Matt Macksood was stopped short, leaving the score at 13-7. The Spartans ensuing kick off was squibbed and downed at the 14-yard line.
It was clear after just 11 minutes into the game that MSU was going to win the battle in the trenches. WMU tried to stretch the field with quick bubble routes but the Spartans’ secondary played good inside-out positioning.
An additional game-changing factor was the Spartans’ ability to convert on third down. And with 1:29 left in the first, Cook connected over the middle with junior tight end Josiah Price from nine yards out to make the score 20-7.
The Broncos’ passing game saw brief success during a three minute drive into the second half. Great penetration by the defensive line forced an incompletion to end the drive, though.
Flag routes were hitting well for the Spartans through the second quarter. And in return, Holmes showed good vision on multiple cuts up field and scored his first Spartan touchdown from eight yards out on a misdirection, making the score 27-7.
The Broncos responded by putting together their best drive of the half with a 42-yard Terrell pass completed to junior wide receiver Corey Davis. The Broncos’ distinguished playmakers were not enough, however, as MSU remained tough in the trenches and held the Broncos to a field goal, 27-10.
In the second half, Cook threw a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett on the opening drive, bringing the score to 34-10.
WMU then suffered a slight scare on the ensuing possession, as its star running back, sophomore Jarvion Franklin, went down after an outside carry. Franklin walked off the field slightly under his own power.
WMU put together a scoring drive late in the third quarter when Davis tipped a short post-pass through tight coverage and made a diving grab, bringing the score to 34-17.
The Broncos would score again on a pass from Terrell to senior tight end Jeremiah Mullinax with 11:09 in the fourth quarter, making the score 34-24.
The Spartans put together a late drive with 8:00 remaining, which ended in a field goal, 37-24.
WMU threatened again late, but freshman cornerback Vayante Copeland made a timely interception in the back of the end zone with 1:36 left in the game to seal the victory.
The Spartans next game is at home against the University of Oregon on Sept. 12.
