ASMSU looks to hire new artist for mental health awareness mural

September 5, 2015

The wall of the Mackerel Sky Gallery of Contemporary Craft building remains blank to this day despite ASMSU’s proposed plan to paint a mural focusing on mental health awareness last spring.

"We are going to push it back," Vice President for Governmental Affairs Bryn Williams said.

Williams said several issues contributed to the mural project postponement including the record breaking rain in June of this year, the departure of the original muralist and the lack of people and resources in the summer.

"Finding a replacement muralist who could do the job we want done on this over the summer is a bit challenging," Williams said.

MSU Alumna Tia Rogers, the artist originally hired to create the mural, graduated in the spring and had every intention in creating the mural until she hit road blocks.

Ultimately, a lack of people in the summer and a time crunch was too much to finish in the time she had, Rogers said.

"As the muralist, I wasn't in control of any of the aspects," Rogers said. "I didn't have a way to get the paints and materials."

Rogers said mental health awareness hits home for her, as an aspiring teacher.

"Personally, living with anxiety and having friends and family that have different mental health issues," Rogers said.

She said the mural is a great project that would mean a lot to people and she hopes it's finished.

"It's something I'm for talking about because I don't think it's something people like to talk about."

Williams said ASMSU has every intention of continuing the project.

"We have everything prepared for this. We've got everything in line with the city," WIlliams said.

Currently, ASMSU is looking for a new muralist to create the painting.

"It's really at this point just about finding a muralist," he said.

The production of the mural depends entirely on when a new muralist is hired, it could be done this fall if ASMSU finds someone quickly or next summer, Williams said.

"It is unfortunate that we had to delay it, but I think when it comes down to it we want to do this in the best possible manner," Williams said.
