It is estimated that 1,100 students commit suicide across college campuses nationwide. This epidemic not only ends lives but leaves behind tremendous grief and confusion for the friends and family of the deceased.
Send Silence Packing is a traveling event put on by the student mental health advocacy organization Active Minds. The event is intended to raise awareness of the suicide epidemic on college campuses and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
“We want to make people aware of resources on campus so that if one of their friends is depressed they know where to go to get help” said MSU Active Minds Communications Director and neuroscience senior Bryan Meek.
For send silence packing, active minds will be bringing 1,100 backpacks to The Rock on Farm Lane, to represent the 1,100 suicides on campuses each year. Meek said each backpack has powerful stories on them.
The event is open for anyone who wishes to attend and hosted by Active Minds. The event takes place takes place this Friday, September 25th from 9 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at The Rock.
