Old Town ScrapFest scheduled to begin Friday evening

July 17, 2015

Old Town ScrapFest will kick off on July 17 from 6-10 p.m. and July 18 from noon-10 p.m., at the Cesar Chavez Plaza in Lansing, Lot 56 at Turner Street and Grand River Avenue in Old Town. The festival will play host to live music, artist booths of recycled, upcycled and scrap-based art, educational activities and a beer tent, according to a statement from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.

Seventeen teams of artists, welders and craftspeople made sculptures out of Friedland Industries scrap materials, according to the memo.

Manager at Friedland, Michael Bass, said the participating teams had a collection day where they were given an hour to collect up to 500 pounds of metal from the plant and then had two weeks to make a sculpture. Bass said the materials were primarily steel and could have come from the public, left-overs from the auto industry, city municipalities and more.

“We are very excited, this is the first year that Scrapfest is its own event,” Bass said.

The sculptures will be entered into a juried competition with cash prizes and trophies awarded to the top three places and a people's choice, according to the festival’s website.

The team's’ artwork will then be auctioned live at 7:00 p.m. on July 18 and proxy-bids are available for those who cannot attend, according to to the memo.

The local music line-up includes Taylor Taylor, DJ Ruckus, Mike Bass and more, according to the memo.

Educational activities include a REACH Studio Art Center for festival patrons to create their own art, an interactive bottlecap mural project led by Kate Cosgrove, a MICA Gallery exploring bike culture and a MSU Broad Art Museum activity, according to the festival’s website.
