East Lansing Police Chief Juli Liebler, who has been with the police department since 1987, will be retiring at the end of the month.

Liebler first joined the ELPD in 1987 as a part-time parking enforcement officer. She joined the force full-time in 1988, and eventually became deputy chief in 2006.

She was named interim police chief in November of 2010 before being officially named police chief in March, 2011.

“In her time with the City of East Lansing, Chief Liebler has been a consummate professional and a highly respected leader,” East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas said in a statement. “It has been a pleasure to work alongside her all of these years. She has helped to make the East Lansing Police Department what it is today and will be greatly missed by her fellow officers and colleagues.”

East Lansing has already started its search for a new chief of police, who will be the city’s second in five years.
