After being named Miss Michigan World, communication senior Cristi Fisher is aiming to become the next Miss World America.
According to the website the competition features delegates consisting of representatives from the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territory of American Samoa.
Delegates will compete in a variety of areas as influenced by the Miss World Organization, including an interview, top model, evening gown, public speaking, video introduction, sports & fitness, beachwear, multimedia and on-stage questioning.
The main focus this year is beauty with a purpose in which each girl picks a charity that they are passionate about with the goal of furthering the mission of the charity.
Fisher chose to work with the Michigan Veterans Foundation and the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit.
"I never had the chance to meet my grandpa, a WWII veteran," Fisher said. "My grandma would share stories about him and how he suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, (because of that) I want to make sure that all veterans have the resources they need to acclimate back into society."
Fisher also aims to spread awareness for homeless veterans not only in Michigan but throughout the United States.
As a part of the multimedia aspect of the competition any share, like, retweet, comment, etc on Fisher's Facebook or Twitter helps her in that category.
She has started the hashtag #missmiworld with hopes of increasing her social media engagement. Fisher wants people to post the name of a veteran and their branch of service coupled with the hashtag to give that person recognition while at the same time aiding her in the competition.
There are still two other parts of the competition open for the public to have their say—the miss photogenic page on Facebook in which people can vote for their desired winner and the people's choice in which people can select the person they support by giving a small donation to the competitor's selected charity.
