Representatives from Yik Yak visit MSU, students sound off on the app

April 9, 2015

The "anonymous Twitter" app Yik Yak is steadily gaining popularity, and it doesn’t look to be slowing down at all.

Representatives from the app’s headquarters stopped by the Union Wednesday to promote the app to students.

Jack McColl, a field marketer for Yik Yak, said he believes MSU will become an even bigger hotspot for the app.

“The app works as an anonymous Twitter,” McColl said. “The only difference is that, instead of seeing the timeline of the people that you follow, the posts that you see are from anonymous people that are within a mile and a half of you."

The app was created two years ago, and has been incredibly popular among students at MSU

Psychology junior Jeff Parkinson said that while Yik Yak is interesting, the lack of accountability can be troubling.

"I can see the problems that it will have in the future," Parkinson said. "It gives students the platform to say things anonymously, and I think that will give the opportunity for students to say offensive comments, and there's no accountability (for) the people who said it.”

While some students see the problems that the app can create, others think of the app in a more entertaining light.

Human biology sophomore Connor Grady said the app is purely for entertainment value, and its effects should not be taken so seriously by students.

“Yik Yak kills time,” Grady said. “There’s some truth to the fact that the app can be used in negative ways, but it’s only an app. People need to learn to live through things.”

McColl, meanwhile, is confident Yik Yak will become as universally used as the app Snapchat.

“Yik Yak’s growth has been exponential,” McColl said. “Last year we just got the award for ‘largest rising startup,’ and the year before that, the winner was Snapchat . Everyone knows how big Snapchat is right now, and we plan on following that same path of success.”
