Instead of the poor pitching that plagued the softball team over the weekend, defensive miscues and a too little, too late offense did the Spartans in on Wednesday.

Toledo (13-22 overall, 0-6 MAC) defeated MSU (16-21 overall, 1-8 Big Ten) at Secchia Stadium 5-3 Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman pitcher Bridgette Rainey cruised through the first four innings, allowing only an unearned run to cross the plate on a fielder’s choice in the second inning.

The Rockets tacked on two more unearned runs in the fifth inning after an error by freshman second baseman McKenzie Long.

Toledo broke the game open with a two out rally. After putting up a strikeout and getting a groundout, Rainey surrendered two singles and a walk.

The Rockets pushed their lead to 5-0, Rainey was charged with just one run in the inning because of a passed ball.

Despite taking the loss, Rainey went the distance, scattering five hits and giving up only one earned run through seven innings. She also walked four batters.

The bats were relatively quiet until the seventh inning.

Freshman outfielder Lea Foerster started the three run inning by taking a four-pitch walk.

Sophomore third baseman Sarah Gutknecht brought home two runs when she doubled to center fielder.

The Spartans scored another run on a single by sophomore outfielder Kassidy Kujawa.

With the tying run on first base, junior shortstop Destinee Luna, who before the at-bat was 2 for 2 at the plate, grounded out to first base to end the miracle comeback and send the Spartans to their fourth consecutive loss.

Senior first baseman McKinzie Freimuth was the only other Spartan to record multiple hits on Wednesday.

MSU will play host to Ohio State this weekend in a three game series, starting Friday at 4 p.m.

OSU lost two of three games against Nebraska last weekend.
