Even when off-duty, MSU police sergeant Maureen Kennedy is devoted to protecting and serving the community.
On Sunday April 26, at around 9 p.m., Kennedy was driving along I96 east of Okemos Road when she spotted a driver she suspected of being impaired. Kennedy called in to the department at 9:06 p.m. to report the reckless driver, according to an alert from the Ingham County Sheriff's Office.
She witnessed the vehicle crash just west of Meridian Road in Alaiedon Township and immediately pulled over. She entered the smoking vehicle and removed the driver's seat belt and pulled him out of the vehicle moments before it was engulfed in flames.
The driver, a 28 year old male from the Fowlerville area, was barely conscious. He was taken to a nearby hospital and sustained no injuries. He was later arrested for operating while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and possession of narcotics and, lodged at the Ingham County Jail without bond, pending arraignment.
Kennedy has served as a police officer for 28 years.
