MSU football unveils new uniforms

April 23, 2015

Why did Shilique Calhoun elect to remain in East Lansing for his senior year and pass up the NFL? Because he was promised new uniforms.

The All-American defensive end's sense of humor earned him a few chuckles at the following the unveiling of the new uniforms for the 2015 season.

Calhoun, the three-year letter winner, donned the alternate uniform, that features a bronze color pattern on the shoulders, the pants and the helmet, symboling the Spartan war shield and the ancient Greek spartan warriors.

The last time MSU wore bronze colored helmets was back in 2011 when they played Michigan. It's one of three uniforms revealed to the public, as Jack Allen, Connor Cook and Ed Davis modeled the remaining two on Thursday.

"I think a lot of guys were waiting for new jerseys and waiting to see if we would have one for years to come," Calhoun said. "It just so happens to be my senior year so I'm blessed for the opportunity."

Davis and Cook were the first to stroll up to the stage, sporting the all-white road uniform with green lettering and a metallic green helmet. Allen followed suit with an all-green home uniform with the same helmet design.

Cook, who's heading into his final spring game under center on Saturday, said that the new getup is more for comfort than looks, despite the obvious excitement that was seen on all of the players' faces.

"It's much more flexible, there's a lot more range of motion than in years past," Cook said. "So obviously the comfort is much more better than before. I like the design too, staying with the traditional and not trying to get too fancy."

In terms of which game the team will wear the alternate uniforms, Calhoun says even though the final decision comes from head coach Mark Dantonio, he hopes that they'll be worn for the second week of the season when Oregon comes to town.
