Lansing Symphony Orchestra presents "Music of Motown" Friday

April 23, 2015

For one night only, Motown is back.

This Friday evening, Wharton Center is partnering up with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra to put on “Music of Motown.”

Diatetics freshman Arturo Gregory is ecstatic for the event.

“Friday’s performance feels like a great opportunity for people to come and experience what is Motown,” Gregory said. “Motown music was really big back in the day, so it would be great to see, somewhat of a revival of it on Friday.”

Journalism sophomore Jamal Tyler is also excited for Friday’s Motown tribute and the history that Motown has.

“Motown is very historic, especially in the state of Michigan,” Tyler said. “All the people in my family grew up around the time that Motown was at its peak, so I’ve heard about Motown my entire life, and all of the family memories that took place during those times.”

Rachel Santorelli, director of marketing and communications of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, has put on tribute events such as this in the past, and is ready to take on the new challenge of presenting Motown.

“We make it a point to try and bring new acts to our performances every year,” Santorelli said. “We work with different organizations to help ensure that our performances are the best that they could be. In the past we’ve done Elton John, Elvis, and other past music icons, and now we’re absolutely excited to perform Motown.”

Santorelli is looking forward to Friday’s event and beleives her symphony will put on a great show.

“Our expectations are sky high for Friday’s performance at the Wharton Center, and ticket sales for the event have been going very well, it looks to be sold out,” Santorelli said. “The performance will have four men singing various Motown songs, while at least 70 to 80 musicians will be on stage providing the backup music. Songs from Motown artists such as The Temptations, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Drifters and Smokey Robinson are only a handful of the acts that will be performed this Friday.”

The performance will take begin 8 p.m. Friday evening with tickets prices ranging from $20 to $47 for adults and $20 to $42 for students, depending on seating.
