“Cancer sucks, buy a duck.”
On Saturday, MSU’s Anti-Cancer Society held their second duck race on Red Cedar River to raise money for their organization.
For $2, anyone could buy a mini rubber duck with a number on it. The ducks were then dropped into the river and the first duck to reach the Red Cedar Rapids was the winner.
The contest was similar to a 50/50 raffle. The person who purchased the duck with the winning number would take home half the money raised.
Last year mathematics junior Joe Hage said he was looking for something the club could do to raise money.
“I saw something online and thought it would be fun because it’s like a 50/50 raffle and people can get into that,” Hage said.
The organization set up a booth near Spartan Stadium to help encourage people to participate.
While on his way to the spring Green and White game, Grand Rapids resident Don Duba bought five ducks for himself and his family.
“It looked fun and anti-cancer is a good cause,” Duba said.
This year more than 80 ducks were purchased and about $200 was raised. The money will be used by the club toward the goal of eliminating cancer in the next generation, as well as handling event costs and other club-related funds.
Clare O’Kane, a comparative cultures and politics senior, said the money will also help with the club’s campaign to ban smoking on campus, which they created a petition for in 2014.
This year’s race had a better turnout than last year, Kane said.
“This year, we had more people watching (the race) which helped,” O’Kane said. “We were able to sell a lot more than last year.”
Marketing senior Tristan Worthington said the club is also actively recruiting new members for the rest of the year and for next school year.
