Young millennial’s have strategically learned simple ways to survey and publicise their relationship to friends and family through Facebook statuses.
Facebook Data Science proceeded in conducting research to truly define the role relationship status’ play in the success of a relationship.
Bogdan State, the scientist responsible for the study believes the most important aspect in the relationship is the current age of the relationship.
“The more you and your significant other have stayed together, the less likely you are to split up,” State said in the study.
Since the amount of days passed since the couple “made it official” on Facebook, the relationship gets more opportunities to dissolve, State said.
“Life circumstances and personal incompatibilities may lead to the relationship ending,” State said.
The Facebook Data Scientists measured relationship starts and ends referring to changes in relationship statuses from “Single” to “In a Relationship” and vice-versa.
Scientists discovered that about half of all Facebook relationships that have survived three months are likely to stay strong reaching a four year mark or longer.
While some students make officializing their status a number one priority, others aren’t as concerned with labeling their relationship.
“It’s not a huge deal,” supply chain management junior Bridget Nazar said. “There are more important things to post and talk about.”
Nazar began dating media and information junior Sidney Young four months ago.
The couple didn’t use Facebook as their primary mode of notifying friends and family about their relationship, and didn’t officially declare it on Facebook until a couple of weeks in.
The couple collectively said they didn’t want to jump the gun in submitting their relationship, and when it came time, Young made the relationship Facebook official.
While some couples post special moments online, Nazar and Young choose to enjoy the time they have with each other.
“Some people get really into their relationship and post everything everywhere,” Nazar said.
Four months later, the couple doesn’t believe stressing and obsessing about status’ is worth the struggle and effort.
