Chicago, Ill. -- Senior forward Branden Dawson, who suffered from concussion-like symptoms after taking an elbow to the head last Wednesday against Purdue, has been cleared to play on Friday for MSU's 9 p.m. Big Ten tournament quarterfinal match in Chicago.

Dawson missed most of the game against Purdue and all of Saturday's game against Indiana, but head coach Tom Izzo said Dawson participated in every drill today except a couple and should resume full activity on Thursday.

Izzo said Dawson went full speed in almost every drill during Wednesday's practice.

"He practiced three-fourths yesterday and seven-eighths today. He’ll be full-go tomorrow and he has had no (problems) which is what they thought," he said. "When it cleared, it cleared. And it’s cleared. So he is doing well. Everybody else is getting healthier, so we’re getting ready to go.”

Izzo wants to see Dawson match his performance in last year's Big Ten tournament, which saw him named Most Outstanding Player averaging 15 points and seven rebounds to help the Spartans win the championship against Michigan.

"I told him to do the same thing again," Izzo said. "I said, ‘Everybody thinks that my month is March; your month might be March.’ So why not go like you did?

“I reminded him of that. He will watch a little film of that, just any kind of motivating things we can do for him. But he was really good yesterday and pretty good today, so I’m hoping that it makes a difference with him in there, especially defensively."

The Spartans took two days off following the conclusion of the regular season Saturday, and Dawson said the time off helped him recover.

Matching last year's Big Ten tournament performance is Dawson's plan now that he is healthy.

"I was watching film of last year's game and what I did and how I played," Dawson said. "So really just trying to bring that same mindset and approach to this weekend."
