Women's tennis to take on Western Michigan Friday

February 11, 2015

The MSU women’s tennis team will travel to Kalamazoo Friday to take on Western Michigan.

The Spartans are currently 5-1, with their only loss coming to No. 6 California.

The team is coming off of a doubleheader win this past weekend, where they defeated Cleveland State 5-2, and Detroit Mercy 7-0. Meanwhile, the Broncos are presently 2-3, with losses against Notre Dame, Indiana, and Tennessee.

Now a few weeks into the regular season, head coach Simone Jardim is feeling confident.

"We've been doing well, we've been improving each week," she said.  "We've had some good wins, especially out in California at the ITA kickoff."

Coach Jardim also expressed her excitement for Friday's match against WMU.

"I think, no matter what, when we play Western Michigan... it's always an interesting match because of in-state rivalry," Jardim said. "A lot of the kids know each other from juniors, so there's a lot of history there."

Perhaps the most obvious mismatch between the Spartans and Broncos is experience. MSU has 3 seniors and 1 junior, to Western’s 1 lone senior, and no juniors.

Coach Jardim emphasized the fact that leadership among the players isn't up to just one person. She stressed that everyone needs to contribute.

"It's college tennis, we are a team," she said. "We are going to need people in different occasions, and everybody is an important piece."

MSU is currently ranked #75 in the country. They're fourth in the Big Ten, although it is still early, and there is little separation between teams.

Friday's match against Western will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the West Hills Athletic Club.
