TEDxMSU Kick-Off Celebration slated for Friday

February 4, 2015

Since 1984, non-profit organization TED has been devoted to spreading ideas across the world. This March, the TEDxMSU conference will bring new inspiration to the students of MSU.

It all starts with a Kick-off Celebration event this Friday at The Hatch.

Biochemistry and molecular biology junior Diana Xu, a student organizer of TEDxMSU, said this conference is meant to focus on MSU alumni, students and faculty. The idea is to introduce ideas and accomplishments that are close to home.

“Students get to hear ideas from students who are just like them, it’s not just ‘important’ people,” Xu said.

Xu said the purpose of the Kick-off Celebration is to start a conversation with everyone involved. She said the organizers are aiming to build a community, rather than students simply hearing the speakers and leaving with unanswered questions.

On Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., students will have the opportunity to talk with the TEDxMSU speakers, as well as the student organizers, in order to learn more about the conference.

“We want to get those sparks flying early,” Xu said.

Xu said she hopes the conference will inspire students to think about ideas and new perspectives that might not have occurred to them before. She said even concepts that students don’t agree with can get them thinking and instigate conversation.

She said what interests her about TED is that the talks can range over so many different subjects.

“They can inspire people no matter what the topic is, and people can relate to the topics no matter what they’re about,” Xu said.
