Softball drops three games over the weekend

February 23, 2015

The Spartan softball team had a rough weekend, dropping their last three games.

First Friday they lost to UC Riverisde 9-2. Next, Saturday they lost to San Diego 3-2 and dropped a game Sunday to Utah State with the same score as Saturday.

Friday both teams gave up early runs with UC Riverside scoring off a double in the first inning and the Spartans getting the run back in the top of the third.

The Spartans would then take the lead in the fifth with Freshman Lea Foerster hitting her first career home run. Riverside would blow the game open in the sixth inning posting six runs on five hits. From there the Spartans weren't able to catch up and dropped the game 9-2.

Saturday the loss the Spartans took would be their first time dropping back-to-back games all season losing in extra innings. Freshman Lea Foerster had a big game Saturday as well driving in two runners on a single in the second.

In the bottom of the inning San Diego struck back with a lead off home run but the Spartans were able to strand the runners who were on the corners after giving up two hits.

Both teams went scoreless until the sixth when San Diego tied up the score on two infield singles. From there the game would go scoreless and in to extra innings where a Spartan error gave San Diego the victory.

The biggest problems the Spartans dealt with this game were stranding runners and committing errors. They stranded eleven runners and committed three errors. One of the errors was a fatal one, which gave San Diego the win in extra innings.

Sunday's game was a pitching duel with the score being so low and the Spartans came out on the short end of the stick going down 3-2.

The Spartans were able to get out to a early lead but in the bottom of the sixth Utah State would score twice and the Spartans didn't see a lead the rest of the game.

Pitcher Valerie Kaff was effective, giving up five hits over six innings but the Spartans bats were quiet and didn't do enough to secure her a victory.

The softball teams looks to recap this weekend going to Miami for the Florida International Tournament, where they will be facing off against Ole Miss and Bethune-Cookman.
