Softball continues hot start to the season with 1-0 win

February 16, 2015

A dominant pitching performance sends MSU (7-3 overall) softball to California on a high note.

Redshirt freshman Kristina Zalewski went the distance on Sunday, leading MSU to a 1-0 victory against Drexel (1-4 overall).

The 7-3 start is the team’s best since 2006 when they started 11-3 and finished with a 34-25 record.

It was just another day at the office for Zalewski, who hasn’t allowed an earned run in five appearances and through 18.1 innings this season.

The win gave the Spartans a 3-2 record in the Florida Atlantic Tournament. MSU will head west this week to participate in the UC-Riverside Tournament.

Zalewski turned in a complete-game shutout outing, scattering six hits through seven innings and striking out two.

The Spartans were able to push across their lone run in the second inning.

Junior third baseman Shanin Thomas reached base on an error and after a series of bunts, sophomore catcher Lindsey Besson used a bunt single to plate Thomas.

That’s all the help Zalewski would need.

Zalewski didn’t allow a runner to reach scoring position until the sixth inning when Drexel loaded the bases. However, the jam was a mere speed bump for the Ann Arbor native, who worked her way out of the inning with a ground out, a not so common illegal substitution and a fly out.

MSU slammed the door shut in the seventh inning with a double play and a groundout.

The Spartans will play again on Friday at noon eastern time against Utah State. MSU will close out the weekend tournament against Utah State as well, with games against the host UC-Riverside and San Diego sandwiched in between.
