Leading up to Relay for Life Kick-off, student groups prepare for week of service

February 4, 2015

MSU’s Spartans Fighting Cancer organization is attempting to transform campus from green to purple this week with Paint the Campus Purple Week. The weeklong event is intended to spread cancer awareness, increase cancer education and promote cancer advocacy.

Each day this week there will be a mini task for students and those around campus to perform. When the tasks are done, a picture is posted to social media along with #MSUgoespurple in the caption.

The events began Monday with the task being to simply spend some time with a cancer survivor. Tuesday has participants changing their profile pictures on social media to purple, leading to participants wearing purple on Wednesday. On Thursday, members will meet at the rock on Farm Lane at noon for a balloon release.

Friday’s task is for participants to paint their nails, hair, face or anything purple or to decorate backpacks with purple ribbons. Lastly, Saturday is dedicated to monetary support, with participants donating $10 to a Relay For Life page.

All of these events lead up to the big Relay For Life kickoff event at noon Sunday at Wharton Center. Sunday’s event is all about welcoming new members and beginning the fundraising process. Emily Gauci, the special events executive of SFC, said she is excited to get the fundraising started.

“Everyone is encouraged to come to learn more about (Relay For Life) and how they can get involved,” Gauci said.

The goal this year is to raise $300,000 toward cancer research at the American Cancer Society.

The organization has done this event before and experienced large success, with almost 5,000 participants last year. Gauci said they are “expecting this year to be even better.”

The event Sunday is intended to be both informational and fun for participants, as there will be some entertainment provided by fellow Spartans.
