City Council tables Park District plans

February 5, 2015

Earlier this week, East Lansing City Council decided to table discussion when it came to two site plans from Park District Investment Group.

A decision on the request to rezone the property at 341-345 Evergreen Ave. and an approval to demolish the existing structures at 341-345 Evergreen Ave. will be decided at a later date.

The site plan is for a four-story, mixed-use building containing retail space on the first floor and three-bedroom apartments on the upper floors. The property is proposed to be rezoned to the B-3, City Center Commercial district.

Sufficient parking for both building structures still needs to be worked out according to Council.

The site plan for these two projects will go back to the Planning Commission.

“This should be put on hold until we have further understanding of what building A will be,” Planning and Zoning Administrator Darcy Schmitt said.

Developers declined an interview and no date for further discussion has been arranged.

Council also passed the charter amendment proposal, which retains the original per capita but changes the need for 3/5 vote to simple majority.

“The simple this is the better,” Mayor Nathan Triplett said. “There have been demonstrable negative impacts on tax payers as a result of this proposal that have nothing to do with development whatsoever.”

This amendment passing comes just before the Feb. 10 deadline and will be in effect for the May 5, Special Election ballot.
