Despite a 16-point loss to Maryland, head coach Tom Izzo stood by his decision to tinker with the starting lineup during Monday’s press conference.

Freshman forward Javon Bess started in place of junior guard Bryn Forbes in Saturday’s game, a move that Izzo adamantly said was for rotation purposes. Izzo wanted to start the game with more of a defensive presence, and by bringing Forbes off the bench, MSU would be able to bring in a dangerous shooter.

After a one-game sample, Izzo is optimistic about his decision.

“I think it is going to help,” Izzo said. “We have to get Forbes more shots. I think it gives us a better rotation off the bench, at least for right now.”

Bess and Forbes are both capable of making an impact on the court. They have contrasting skill sets, however. Bess is more of a slasher and defender, while Forbes is comfortable floating along the perimeter and working off screens.

In the first game with the adjusted rotation, Izzo admits Forbes was misused.

“I did a poor job with Bryn in the last game,” Izzo said. “I did a poor job. Bryn didn’t do a poor job, I did. I felt like Denzel was shooting the ball pretty well, Trice was shooting it great, and we did not run enough stuff for Bryn.”

Forbes is shooting an impressive 46.3 percent from three point range and just under 50 percent from the field. Against Maryland, he took six shots and finished with just five points. Izzo noted that his handling of Forbes will be one of the biggest adjustments going forward.

Although Forbes can make a difference coming off the bench, Bess can also help the Spartans out. He scored six points in a season-high 22 minutes, but he is still adjusting to the college game after missing time earlier this year due to injury.

“I wouldn’t look for 20 points a game out of him this year,” Izzo said. “But I would look at, he’s gonna start knocking around, getting some solid points and getting some more rebounds and playing better defense but giving me the chance to bring Bryn off the bench and hopefully, it’s gonna help Bryn and our team.”

Bess plays with an attitude. He could be key moving forward because according to Izzo, “he’ll do anything you ask him to do.”

“I mean that kid brings some smash-mouth to the table,” Izzo said. “He ain’t backing down from nobody. And I think that’s going to be a valuable thing.”
