To acknowledge Human Rights Day on Dec. 10, Amnesty International MSU hosted a writeathon to help raise awareness and urge the government to help people facing human rights abuses.
"Amnesty (International) focuses on 10 cases that could really benefit from social activism at this moment in time," said Taylor Dombrowski, vice president of Amnesty International MSU.
Amnesty International dedicates the period from Dec. 1 to Dec. 17 for people to write letters urging government officials to take steps to help those who have suffered human rights abuses.
Students and community groups all around the country host a Write for Rights event for people to sign templates of letter or write their own letters to help mobilize positive action.
Dombrowski said each year the cases are different.
"One of them (the cases) is in El Salvador, where a lot of women are imprisoned if they get an abortion or sometimes women who also have miscarriages go to prison because they're seen as trying to have had an abortion," she said.
This year's cases also include ones in Saudi Arabia, China, Nigeria, the Palestinian Territories, Brazil, Bhopal and USA.
"I think it's really important for students, especially at this age, you know in the university level, because we are the ones that make change in this country and we're the ones that have the energy to make movements and to drive social change," Dombrowski said.
