Sometimes, the best gifts are the ones you make yourself

If you want to give a great holiday present while sticking to your budget, here is an easy do-it-yourself gift idea with some seasonal cheer.

What you’ll need:

  • Porcelain ornaments: You can find many types of porcelain ornaments for less than a dollar at Meijer, Wal-Mart or other department stores.
  • Sharpies
  • A template: Inexpensive holiday templates are available at most craft stores and grocery stores.
  • Ribbon

Directions:

Step 1: Find a clean surface to work.

You don’t want to smudge your holiday message or design, especially when using permanent marker.

Step 2: Write a message.

‘Seasons Greetings,’ ‘Happy Holidays,’ ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Let it Snow’ are all appropriately festive!

Step 3: Trace your design.

Using your template, transfer your chosen design onto the ornament. Feel free to mix it up with different colors of marker.

Step 4: Let it dry and bake it.

Once you’re done, let it dry for several minutes. That will prevent the design from smearing. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake the ornament for 30 minutes. Once it’s done baking, place it on a cooling rack for 20 minutes or until it is no longer hot.

Step 5: String the ribbon and give to a loved one!

String your ribbon through the hole at the top of your ornament. For a finishing touch, you can make a tie and tag and address it to the recipient.
