Volleyball closes regular season with five game winning streak

November 28, 2014

The volleyball team closed its regular season on a five game winning streak.

MSU (18-13 overall, 11-9 Big Ten) defeated Iowa (14-17 overall, 6-14 Big Ten) in straight sets. 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-15) in Iowa City, Iowa on Friday night.

It was the third consecutive sweep for the Spartans, who have only lost one set during the win streak.

Freshman setter Rachel Minarick set the tone early with two kills and three assists en route to a 6-1 opening set advantage.

Minarick finished the game with five kills, 31 assists and a game-high .455 hitting percentage.

MSU would hold the lead from there as senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster sealed the set with a service ace.

It was another record setting day for Moster, who with her 21 digs against the Hawkeyes moved into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time digs list (2,180).

In the second set, MSU had to fight back after trailing 7-11.

A 4-1 run, topped off by a kill from freshman middle blocker Alyssa Garvelink cut the deficit to one, 14-15.

Garvelink totaled nine kills, it was the fourth time in the last five games that she had at least nine kills.

MSU closed the second set with a 7-1 run.

The third set was another tight one.

Iowa's senior middle blocker Alessandra Dietz cut MSU's lead to two, 12-14 with her kill but that would be the last Hawkeyes point for a while.

The Spartans responded with a 7-0 run, pushing the score to 21-12.

Alyssa Garvelink for the second consecutive game closed out a win with a kill on match point.

MSU won the set, 25-15.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig led the team with 14 kills.

The Spartans will now have to wait until Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. to see if they will be selected into the NCAA Tournament.

The selection show can be seen on ESPNU.

MSU has made the NCAA tournament each of the last three seasons, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen round the past two years.
