Across the United States, more than 600,000 people experience homelessness, and in Michigan, 92,000 people were homeless at some point during 2013.
“All of us here at MSU have at least walked through this wind and cold to a class or two,” supply chain management junior Josh York said. “Imagine being out there in the cold and having no where to go.”
Joining hands in efforts to “share the warmth,” the York Project will join MSU student groups, including Spartans Rebuilding Michigan, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Chi Theta and Spartan Ski Club, to collect garments of clothing for those in need.
There will be collections today at the rock on Farm Lane and the following Monday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The goal is to collect 2,000 items — gently used hats, socks, gloves and scarves — and raise $2,000 in online donations to purchase more items. Everything will be donated to the Volunteers of America homeless coalition in Lansing.
“Go a day without getting a Starbucks or getting a drink at the bar and donate that $2 or $3 to buying a hat and helping us share the warmth,” York said.
