Winless weekend sends volleyball to .500 record at midpoint of conference season

October 28, 2014

MSU played two competitive games on the road over the weekend but have nothing to show for it.

The Spartans (12-9 overall, 5-5 Big Ten) lost on Friday night in Columbus to No. 20 Ohio State (16-6 overall, 7-3 Big Ten) in five sets, 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-14, 6-15).

It was the third time this season that the Spartans lost a game in five sets, the loss also snapped MSU’s three game win streak.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig was one dig shy of a double-double, totaling a team-high 13 kills and nine digs.

Freshman setter Rachel Minarick also had a noteworthy night. She finished one kill shy of a double-double, recording ten digs and nine kills while hitting at a .533 clip.

On Saturday, the results were not much better for the Spartans.

MSU went down in straight sets against No. 7 Penn State (20-3 overall, 8-2 Big Ten), 3-0 (24-26, 17-25, 21-25).

Despite being swept the Spartans went back and forth with the Nittany Lions, there was 34 tied scores and 14 lead changes in the contest.

A lone bright spot for MSU over the weekend was senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster, who made her way up the Big Ten record books.

Moster recorded a team-high 11 digs against the Nittany Lions, moving her past the 2,000 digs mark and into seventh place all time in the conference. She is currently at 2,008 digs and needs five more to past Purdue’s Kelli Miller for sixth all time.

The attack was more balanced for MSU on Saturday as four players finished with at least six kills but none of which totaled more than seven kills.

Senior middle blocker and team co-captain Jazmine White, sophomore opposite hitter Allyssah Fitterer and Reinig all had seven kills.

The Spartans are now at the halfway point in the conference portion of the season. MSU has a 5-5 record against Big Ten competition and currently sit in 7th place in the conference.

MSU takes on No. 10 Illinois (16-5 overall, 8-2 Big Ten) on Friday at Jenison Field House.
