Senior libero Kori Moster reaches 2,000 digs in loss against Penn State

October 25, 2014

Start fast, finish slow was the motto for the volleyball team on Saturday evening.

The Spartans (12-9 overall, 5-5 Big Ten) lost in straight sets to No. 7 Penn State (20-3 overall, 8-2 Big Ten), 0-3 (24-26, 17-25, 21-25).

Senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster got her 2,000 dig in the first set, becoming the eighth player in Big Ten history to accomplish the feat.

MSU gave Penn State all they could handle in the first set, going blow for blow with the Nittany Lions.

Leading 24-22, the Spartans were one point away from taking the first set but conceded four straight points to Penn State and dropped the set, 24-26.

Moster finished with 11 digs, which was good enough to surpass former Iowa Hawkeye Bethany Yeager for seventh all time in the conference.

The second set was back and forth but again the inability to finish came back to hurt MSU.

The two teams went in opposite directions after the score was tied at 15, MSU committed five errors and Penn State went on a 10-2 run to win the set, 25-17.

In the third set again MSU kept it close but once crunch time hit the Spartans crumbled.

A kill by freshman middle blocker Autumn Christenson cut the lead to two points, 21-23 but that would be the last point the Spartans would score.

The Nittany Lions won the set, 25-21.

It was a balanced scoring night for MSU, who had five players register at least four kills. Freshman setter Rachel Minarick finished with a team-high 29 assists.

MSU is off until Halloween, which is when they take on the No. 10 Illinois Fighting Illini at Jenison Field House.
