MSU falls in Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational opener, 3-2

September 19, 2014

No. 25 MSU (5-4 overall) suffered another close loss at home on Friday afternoon, losing 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 26-24, 13-15) against LIU-Brooklyn (8-3 overall).

After surrendering the first three points of the first set, MSU used a 14-8 run to give them a three-point lead.

The Spartans and Blackbirds traded points from that point on. MSU took the set 25-22.

In the second set, LIU jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back. The Spartans lost the set 21-25, despite a late push.

Another quick start in the third set catapulted the Blackbirds to a win. Before MSU could catch their breath they were down 9-3. LIU won the set 25-20.

MSU rallied and made the game interesting, taking a thrilling fourth set 26-24. A kill by sophomore opposite hitter Allyssah Fitterer and a LIU attack error was the difference in the set.

Consistent with the rest of the game, a quick start by the Blackbirds in the fifth set doomed the Spartans’ fate. MSU lost the set, 13-15.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig led the Spartans with 24 kills. Senior libero Kori Moster had 21 digs. Senior defensive specialist Ryian Hubbard had a team high 29 assists.

MSU is back in action tonight at Jenison Field House at 7 p.m. against Western Kentucky (11-2 overall).
